Hungary - Europe's foremost hunting country
The reason for Hungary being the foremost hunting country in Europe is quite simple. Hungary used to be part of the Austrian empire, which had very strong and well- developed German/Austrian hunting traditions. Large hunting areas were common, and the game conservation was well organized. Of course, the hunting was generally reserved for the Court and the nobility. In modern times, these groups were replaced by high-level state officials. In 1996, a new law changing the hunting conditions fundamentally, was instituted. The basic thought was that the game and the hunting is a national asset which must be preserved and be made to yield interest economically. The hunting in Hungary was commercialized, though its roots in the hunting culture and organization remained unchanged.
Today, the hunting areas are required to cover at least 1 000 hectares. Each huntsman is to have at least 100 hectares at his disposal while hunting. Damages on the gamestock is to be compensated for, and trophy evaluation is compulsory. These are just some of the regulations.
Hungary is divided into 24 hunting districts containing a total of 1 145 hunting areas open for Hungarian and foreign hunters alike. The number of domestic hunters is about 48 000. The number of visiting hunters is high, especially from Germany.
It is quite common to think of Hungary as a very expensive hunting country. In fact, this is quite far from the truth. Hungary can be easily accessible for all hunters.
